Big Problem, Little Problem, or No Problem?

November 6, 2024

I’m writing this post well before the 2024 election. The election will be held on Tuesday, November 5 and this article is scheduled to post Wednesday, November 6.

And well before many head to the polls and cast their votes, I knew what I’d be writing. Before we know any results and before the politicians and news outlets give us their views/opinions/slants on what happened Tuesday, I knew what I’d be writing.

I heard one news talk show host say recently that many believe Tuesday will be a tense day as the election rhetoric reaches its pinnacle. However, the host believed Tuesday would be a fairly average day on the “tense” meter, but that the stress would happen days, weeks, or maybe even months after the election, as the nation deals with the results.

Look at that dent on our van bumper. The picture was taken back in 2008. I think you would agree it appears to be a pretty small problem. Now, when it happened, it might have seemed to be a little bigger. But soon, we realized it wasn’t much of a problem at all.

I love the way one of our daughters approaches our grandchildren when they have what you might call a “life disruption.” Initially, they may act as if the world is ending. She’ll ask them, “Is this a big problem, little problem, or no problem?” What might have seemed to be big in the beginning often is either a little problem or no problem at all.

That’s a good way for us to view this election cycle.

A question to ask ourselves is “What do we really believe?”

We may wring our hands and worry excessively about the future, but if we really believe that God is the ultimate authority, in full control, and is every second working His plan, then the elections are no problem at all.

Look what the Bible tells us.

“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” (Romans 13:1, NIV)

God was not surprised by what happened on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. He has never been surprised by a single election. He wasn’t surprised with the rulers during Old Testament times, early New Testament times, or any administration in any part of the world since.

The authorities that exist have been established by God.

There’s hope in that.

  1. Great post, Tim! I love most of all that God is in control, and we can just rest and have peace in that.
