God is Bigger…

I’ve been advised to not pepper blog posts with questions. Raising questions throughout a post runs the risk of slowing the reader and taking them away from the main message. However, today, I’m intentionally doing just that. I want you to give careful consideration to the questions and your answers.

Here’s the first one.

Are your problems too big for you to handle?

Take a moment and think about that.

One definition of problem from Dictionary.com is “any question or matter involving doubt, uncertainty, or difficulty. This brings me to a follow up question.

Do you experience doubt, uncertainty, or difficulty in your life?

Most likely the answer is yes. It should be no surprise that we all have problems. Sometimes our problems can be handled easily. Losing weight may be as simple as eating less and exercising more. Easy, yet difficult.

How about choosing a career? You would think it would be as simple as finding something you love and pursuing it. We should be able to make this decision and do the things required to fulfill our dreams. Sounds easy, yet often proves to be difficult.

Similarly, sustaining a long-term relationship. Shouldn’t we be able to consistently love someone, treat them with respect, and consider them before ourselves? Can’t be that tough. But it is. You would hope two people could handle a relationship on their own. Still, relationships come with doubt, uncertainty and difficulty, even when we want the opposite.

Then there are problems we clearly cannot handle ourselves. The economy turns south. A pandemic ravages the world. Our health declines. We age. There are no playbooks for how to deal with the doubt, uncertainty, or difficulty we feel.

Do not lose hope.

I took the photograph of the crane simply because it loomed over the coastline. I don’t think I’d ever seen a crane that large. It stands as a reminder to me that God is bigger than my problems. No matter what they are.

You don’t have to take my word for it. Revelation 22:13 reflects Jesus’ words to John as Jesus assures John that He is bigger than any problem.

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” (NASB)

Jesus is God. He is eternal. There was no beginning to Him. There will be no end. He is bigger than anything you or I face during our short time on this earth.

Jesus brought about creation. He existed during Old Testament times. He lives now and will be forever on the throne. Hebrews 12:1-2 tells us to fix our eyes on Jesus. Why?

Because He is the “founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” (ESV)

No matter what causes us to doubt, have uncertainty, or experience difficulty, God is bigger. It is His joy to have died for us and He will reign supreme for eternity. Whether our problems are small or large, join me in turning them over to Him.

Today’s feature photo comes from a “photo-a-day” challenge I pursued several years ago. The photo inspires the topic. For me, the posts challenge my creativity, writing discipline, and dependence on God for His message. My prayer is that you find hope in God’s Word, and that you’ll share your hope with others.

  1. Hey Tim – I’m with Terri on this ~ a great post and an important reminder about who GOD IS. I could not help but think of GOD’s response to Moses when Moses asked GOD what he should tell the “sons of Israel”—who most certainly had “problems too big” for them to handle—what the name was of “The God of your fathers” who sent him to lead them out of captivity: “14b This is what you shall say to the sons of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” 15b. . . This is My name forever, and this is the name for all generations to use to call upon Me.” (Ex. 3:14b, 15b – NASB). Like so much that gets lost in translating the Hebrew into English, what’s missing is that in the Hebrew GOD’s name – “I AM” – is a phrase without the constraint of time on it: GOD IS WHO HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN IN ETERNITY PAST (even during their captivity – but Who they forgot about) AND WHO IS THE SAME WHO IS DELIVERING THEM (from their captivity – but Whose method of delivery they will grumble, complain about, and under-appreciate) AND WHO IS ALREADY WHO HE IS GOING TO BE IN EVERY MICRO-SECOND OF THE FUTURE (Who they will just as quickly forget about as has been – and was – and will be their habit). It’s incredible to me that despite how much – indeed, how precisely we mirror to actions and attitudes of the Israelites (all descendants of Israel (i.e., Jacob ~ Ge, 32:28) at this point in their history): GOD has BEEN, IS, and WILL BE, “I AM”! Seems to me that the only time we can really lose hope is when we forget that. Of course not unlike the Israelites, that has been, is, and likely will continue to be our habit? Keep up the good work Tim – my best to you and Ms. Sarah et. al., guy

    1. Thank you Guy. That is inspiring to remember. I really appreciate your thoughts on my posts. I can only wish readers would view my posts the way I view your comments (and comments from others). Each, in its own way, adds to the message. Best to you and Terri.
