Let’s Join in God’s Purpose.

I attended a walking tour of Chicago to learn about options for increasing a city’s walkability. On our last day I had free time and enjoyed an evening cruise on Lake Michigan. As I stood on the boat, I thought about the mix of the view.

The miracle of God’s creation stood out. Lake Michigan’s vastness amazed me. The water seemed to go on forever. The sky provided a color palette (not shown very well in the photo) only the Lord could design. Sandwiched between the water and sky lay the product of God’s greatest creation—humans.

The simplicity of form along with the ingenuity it takes to produce a city complete with all it takes wasn’t lost on me. It also wasn’t lost on me that I was there to talk about how to simply walk safely in a city that large. No small feat.

We are here by design.

God planned for you and me to live in harmony with the rest of His creation. Unfortunately, Adam and Eve couldn’t settle for the best and chose to selfishly try to make God’s plan better for them. As a result, man struggled every day, on his own, to get back to what God intended.

Even today, we tend to build big cities, fine homes, and wide highways, looking for a way to satisfy a desire to make the most of our lives here on earth. We want better. We want more. We want what we want. And on our own, it doesn’t work.

The Bible tells us that It doesn’t have to be that way.

“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” (Proverbs 19:21, NIV)

God isn’t telling us to not pursue comfort, improvement, or things that make our lives better. He is using Solomon, a man of great wisdom, to remind us that God’s plan for us is what prevails. God intended for life to be good. He wanted a special, loving relationship with His crowning achievement. His purpose is that we obey, honor, and glorify Him.

His purpose will prevail over our plans every time. If not right now, in eternity, for sure.

As you walk, ride, or maybe even boat, find a way to live out your obedience to Him so that He is honored and glorified in your life. If we do this, make this our plan, we will be in line with His plan. That’s the plan that matters.

Today’s feature photo comes from a “photo-a-day” challenge I pursued several years ago. The photo inspires the topic. For me, the posts challenge my creativity, writing discipline, and dependence on God for His message. My prayer is that you find hope in God’s Word, and that you’ll share your hope with others.

  1. This topic has been close to my heart lately. I pray each morning that everything I do and say that day will glorify God. Not an easy task, but one that does brings joy and peace just in trying to do my best.

    1. Barbara, think you so much for commenting. I agree with you that no matter whether we feel like we were successful at doing the things we should, when we do our best and take our cares and concerns to the Lord, we’ve done what He asks. I appreciate you reading and sharing your thoughts. My apologies for not catching your comment sooner. It was hidden in my “need to approve” section and I missed it. Would love to have you comment more.

  2. The picture is beautiful and the colors amazing! You have great skills in your photography to capture that on film. And, to define what we are seeing, relating everything back to our walk with God. Thank you for your encouragement to always walk closer and closer with the LORD!
