Timing is Everything!

The frog sat atop my computer monitor and stared at me every morning.

Every. Single. Morning.

We had a deal. Unless scheduling prevented it, I would take on the thing I most dreaded that day. If I put on my big boy pants and tackled the difficult tasks, he and I got along great. If, at the end of the day, I had refused, he mocked me.

You’ve likely heard the following quote.

“If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And if it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.” – Mark Twain

I never named my little green fried, but he and Mark Twain knew what they were talking about. My little buddy never let me down. Always sitting there. Smiling. Reminding. Or mocking. Unless I covered him up or put him in a drawer. Believe me, that never helped.

I can testify that getting those difficult, tough to do items off the list early made a huge difference to my day. Sure, I had to get through the sometimes nasty, disgusting chore of frog-eating, but once done, I breezed through the more enjoyable tasks.

You know what else made a difference? Speaking with the Lord every morning, before going to the office. Talking with Him about my day and what lay before me. Some He and I both knew about, some only He.

Timing is Everything.” #hope #joy #WritingCommunity Click To Tweet

On top of all-knowing, His timing is perfect.

That means He is always on-time. He’s not early. He’s not late. Knowing that, why would you not wait on Him.

When you are anxious—wait on Him.

When you are nervous—wait on Him.

When you need help—wait on Him.

When you need an answer—wait on Him.

You get the idea. King David knew about waiting on the Lord. He spent many years dealing with enemies, false witnesses, and violent men. He shares words of encouragement through all of it.

“Wait for the LORD; Be strong and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the LORD.” (Psalm 27:14, NASB)

I like the way David Guzik, Enduring Word bible commentary, explains waiting. Waiting is not passive sitting around until the LORD does something. He brings us strength as we seek Him, and rely on Him, instead of relying on our own strength.

He includes in his commentary this from Charles H. Spurgeon. “Wait at his door with prayer; wait at his foot with humility; wait at his table with service; wait at his window with expectancy.”

We should wait on the LORD:

  • As a beggar waits for handouts at the rich man’s door.
  • As a student waits to be taught.
  • As a servant waits on his master.
  • As a traveler waits for the directions of the guide.
  • As a child waits upon his parent.1

If you’re like me, you may need a little green friend to remind you of what you know you need to do. You also would benefit greatly from spending time with God in the morning and waiting on His timing.

Have you ever waited on Him and received an answer with perfect timing? I’m sure we’d all be encouraged by hearing about it.

Today’s feature photo comes from a “photo-a-day” challenge I pursued several years ago. The photo inspires the topic. For me, the posts challenge my creativity, writing discipline, and dependence on God for His message. My prayer is that you find hope in God’s Word, and that you’ll share your hope with others.
