Value in the Good News of Jesus.

Someone gave my wife this most interesting ladybug purse hanger. I had never seen one before she got this one, but I’ll tell you, it is a handy device. For those of you who haven’t seen one, the purse hangs on a hook shaped to face under the table. The purse while hanging is off the floor and out of the way of traffic.

You may be thinking, “Genius. I never can seem to find a place for my bag.”

My wife and I are in this camp. There’s not always room for purses or bags in a restaurant booth. Often, restaurant chairs have sloped backs making hanging of anything difficult. And the floor, well, you can imagine what comes in on the bottom of people’s shoes. I’m trainable and I’ve learned to look for places to place my wife’s purse, work bag, makeup bag, or any other bag (especially fabric ones), anywhere but on the floor. Same applies to my camera bag.

So, when I saw this photo, I thought about the benefits and why you don’t see them being used everywhere.

The same goes for being a Christ-follower.

Could be people aren’t aware they exist.

“So it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.” (Luke 24:46-47, NASB)

Knowing about a small bag-hanging device could be life improving. Knowing about Jesus and experiencing His salvation is life changing.

Could be some don’t see the need.

“Jesus replied to her, ‘If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, “Give me a drink,” you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” (John 4:10)

Keeping your belongings close by, yet out of the way and off a dirty floor is helpful. Receiving the living water of Jesus Christ gives us life.

Maybe some believe it’s more trouble than it is worth.

“However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.” (Romans 8:9).

Sure, digging around to find the hanger, or remembering to bring it with you can be a hassle, but when it’s working, it is valuable. And as I mentioned, some hangers are designed to be clipped to your strap, so it is always with you and easily accessible. If the Holy Spirit lives within us, we can rely on His power, not ours.

What other values do you see in the good news of Jesus?

Today’s feature photo comes from a “photo-a-day” challenge I pursued several years ago. The photo inspires the topic. For me, the posts challenge my creativity, writing discipline, and dependence on God for His message. My prayer is that you find hope in God’s Word, and that you’ll share your hope with others.

  1. Love the comparisons! I know that some think being a Christian is too much work, much like remembering to always pack that bag hanger. But the more you pack it away the easier it gets to not forget it. Same as following Christ. The more you “do” Gods word the easier it is to live it out.

    1. Thank you Teresa. Good point about developing the habit of packing and using something. Love it!
