God’s Amazing Love

The monarch butterfly is an amazing creation.

Their beautiful colors (specifically orange, yellow, black, and red) warn predators to stay away due to their toxicity. If eaten, the predator doesn’t usually die, but gets sick enough to not want another monarch meal in the future.

Monarchs average about 4 inches across and weigh less than 0.02 ounces. Imagine something as delicate as a butterfly migrating from southern Canada to central Mexico. It’s even more amazing that adult monarchs only live two to six weeks. That means they often die partway through the migration. Their offspring pick up where their parents leave off to complete the migration.

I photographed the monarchs at an arboretum. As I watched them flit from flower to flower, I couldn’t help but reflect on God’s remarkable work. I didn’t notice it as I sat and watched, but after processing the photos, I realized just how durable their wings appeared. They look as if God stretched a micro-tarp from vein to vein. Just taunt enough to catch the right amount of air.

Psalm 104 is all about God the creator. I love verses 24 and 25.

“How many are your works, LORD!

In wisdom you made them all;

the earth is full of your creatures.

There is the sea, vast and spacious,

teeming with creatures beyond number—

living things both large and small.” (Psalm 104:24-25, NIV)

As amazed as I am at the wonders of the monarch, I am even more amazed at God’s love for you and me.

You may be in a place of constant worship and praise. You recognize God’s love for you and want to spend every minute building your relationship with Him. Or you may be running from God. Your past (in minutes, days, or years) may be keeping you from enjoying unity with Him.

It doesn’t matter where you are in life, remember God loves you. He wants the very best for you. His faithfulness is more expansive than the sky. No matter where you are, His love is unfailing. You can count on Him.

David tells us about God’s love for us.

“Your love, LORD, reaches to the heavens,

your faithfulness to the skies.

Your righteousness is like the highest mountains,

your justice like the great deep.

You, LORD, preserve both people and animals.

How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!

People take refuge in the shadow of your wings. (Psalm 36:5-7, NIV)

Next time you see a butterfly flittering aimlessly about, consider that God made them. As amazing as they are, His love for you is even more amazing.
